What PolicyZen Can Do

• Read and extract information from any insurance document — PDF, photo, or scan
• Answer specific coverage questions based on your actual policy language
• Identify your deductible, copay, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum
• Flag when a policy is approaching expiration
• Identify your insurance carrier, policy number, and agent contact information
• Store multiple policies across all insurance types in one organized wallet
• Provide plain-English explanations of complex policy language
• Identify what each policy covers and what it explicitly excludes

What PolicyZen Cannot Do

• Cannot guarantee coverage decisions. Only your insurance carrier can make final coverage determinations. PolicyZen tells you what your policy document says — not what your insurer will decide in a specific claim situation.
• Cannot verify employment-linked coverage status in real time. Health and dental insurance tied to employment (employer-sponsored plans) can terminate when employment ends. PolicyZen shows you what the document says, but cannot independently confirm coverage is still active. Real-time FHIR verification (coming soon) will address this.
• Cannot provide legal advice. Policy interpretation in a dispute context requires a licensed insurance attorney or professional.
• Cannot file claims on your behalf. PolicyZen helps you understand your coverage — acting on it is up to you.
• Cannot guarantee OCR accuracy on poor-quality documents. Blurry photos or heavily damaged documents may result in incomplete extraction. Always verify critical information directly with your carrier.

How Your Documents Are Handled

Storage

Your documents are stored in a private, encrypted file storage system. They are never publicly accessible. Only you can access your policies.

AI Processing

Document text is processed by OpenAI's API to answer your questions. OpenAI processes this data according to their API data usage policies. PolicyZen uses the API tier, which means OpenAI does not use API-submitted data to train their models.

Encryption

All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256). Your insurance documents are treated with the same security standards as financial data.

No Selling Your Data

PolicyZen does not sell your personal data or insurance information to third parties. We earn revenue from subscriptions — not from monetizing your data. See How We Make Money.

Coverage Verification (Coming Soon)

The next major feature in PolicyZen is real-time coverage verification for health and dental insurance. Using FHIR patient access APIs — mandated by CMS for all major health insurers — users will be able to confirm their health coverage is actually active with a single tap.

This matters because health and dental insurance tied to employment has no expiration date on the card. Coverage can end when employment does — and most people don't know it happened until they're standing at a doctor's office. PolicyZen will be the first consumer app to solve this problem in real time.

Your identity will be verified once (via IAL2-compliant identity verification) before accessing your health records. After that, coverage checks are available on demand.
